Dianne Coulter wins inaugural award

Lauraine Diggins Fine Art would like to congratulate sculptor Dianne Coulter for winning the 2009 Inaugural Blake Prize for Human Justice. Dianne won with her piece titled ”Cousin of Elizabeth NT”. The life-size sculpture of a pregnant indigenous woman holding a loaf of bread is made of ceramic, polyuruthane, cloth and steel armature. The plastic-wrapped bread in the girl’s hand inspires optimistic hopes for loaves and fishes, but when viewed in context, in light of the complex raft of contemporary indigenous social issues, it becomes a reminder of a gritty reality for many Northern Territory communities.

Vale Petyarr Anangker-areny

Lauraine Diggins Fine Art are sorry to advise that Petyarr Anangker-areny passed away on the evening of the 19th August. The family have given permission for us to convey this sad news. She is the sister of Kathleen, Gloria, Myrtle, Violet and Jeannie and mother of Carol, Elizabeth, Lucy, Helen and Trevor, and the mother of Elizabeth Kunoth Kngwarray and grandmother of Genevieve Kemarr Loy. One of the renowned Petyarr sisters, her work was widely exhibited and collected. She was part of the original art movement at Utopia, participating in the batik project in the late 1970s and the 1980s. She also created painted and carved wooden sculptures in the 1980s. In respect to the artist, we will not offer her work for sale in the immediate future. She was a vibrant and grounded woman with strong connections to her family and country and we thoroughly enjoyed working with her. She will be sadly missed.

International Commission for Gloria Petyarr

Gloria’s Leaf design was selected by Hermes for their 2009 collection, and has been released internationally. The design will feature on Hermes’ desireable silk scarves.
This commission came about as a result of Lauraine Diggins Fine Art exhibiting Gloria’s work at ArtParis 2006 where she caught the eye of artistic director of Hermes, Pierre Alexis Dumas.
Gloria’s works have been acquired by major public institutions and countless private collections both within Australia and internationally. She is regarded as being an intregal part of the history of painting in Utopia; an artist whose originality and diversity exemplifies the evolution, particularly of women’s art, from the eastern region of Central Australia.
Gloria’s Bush Medicine Leaf Dreaming is perhaps her most successful stylistic development. Through the use of abstraction and repetition, she represents the bush leaves collected by women creating a design with a dynamic sense of swirling movement.

Vale Peter Walsh

The art world is mourning the untimely passing of artist Peter Walsh on the 16th January, 2009. Peter died of cancer-related problems in Melbourne, aged only 51.

Peter was a gentle, perceptive and unique figure in contemporary art. After studying at the Wimbledon School of Art in London and the VCA in Melbourne, his first exhibition was held in 1986. He exhibited with Lauraine Diggins Fine Art from 2001 and it was a privilege for us to have exhibited Peter?s work for a number of years, to come to know him as a wonderful human being and to appreciate his intelligence and warm friendly presence.

Peter is survived by his children, Hazel and Alice; his partner, Lisa; his mother, Margaret and his brother, Andrew.

We are sure that all who met Peter were touched by his easy manner and wicked smile, as we were. He will be sadly missed.
