Congratulations to Genevieve Kemarr Loy

Congratulations to Genevieve Kemarr Loy, finalist in this year’s John Leslie Art Prize at Gippsland Art Gallery. One of Australia’s most prestigious prizes for landscape, the exhibition will showcase 49 finalists, chosen from 577 entries received from artists Australia-wide and will be held from 5 September to 22 November at Gippsland Art Gallery.

Genevieve’s painting, relates to the lizard Angerta (an-jerr-a), encompassing both cultural heritage or Dreaming and the reality of the lizard today, its striking markings and the tracks as it leaves in the sand of Central Australia as it searches for food. This is a special lizard, an ancestral being, linked to creation stories, not one used as a food source. Genevieve displays great control of the delicate and detailed marks that make her way across the canvas to create vibrant pulsating and richly coloured surfaces. A large painting of this size can take her a few months work to complete.
