Ambrose Patterson – a new book

An impressive new publication about Ambrose Patterson by Jane Alexander was recently launched at the Victorian Artists Society.

Thoroughly researched and beautifully illustrated, the author spoke about her connection with the artist and the process resulting in the book.

With further comments by Danielle Knapp, curator of American and Regional Art at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art whose research shines a light onto Patterson’s influence on modern art in Seattle; and Dr Gerard Vaughan who illuminated the artist’s life story, creating art in Australia, France and America.

Ambrose Patterson, painter, printmaker, teacher and a protégé of Nellie Melba, the young Australian artist was ensconced in bohemian Paris during one of its most significant epochs.

By 1916 he had moved to Hawaii, San Francisco and finally Seattle, where he became the Pacific Northwest’s first modernist link to Europe.
