My images were all taken at the Ararat Cup in Country Victoria in 1999, shot as part of a freelance project to help the community of Ararat which was suffering the combined ravages of drought and economic recession. The images were exhibited throughout the township in the following months, in order that the community would be able to hold a mirror up to itself and be proud of their achievements and gain strength and pride for what they already have. These images have been retained in an archive in the local shire as a document of the life and times of Ararat in 1999, prior to the Millennium.

My decision to shoot these images with a panorama camera was not made for fashionable reasons, more it was made to match the notion of the scope that is so often felt at a race track, the very horizontal landscape. The documentary approach or ?fly on the wall?, where I have not in any way altered the position or gestures of the people in these images, puts you in the room in a very easy way - it takes you to that place and time, in a way only photography can do. A true reflection of a moment in time.
