茶不求精,而壶亦不燥;酒不求冽,而樽亦不空。素琴无弦而常调,短笛无腔而自适。纵难超越羲皇,亦可匹俦嵇阮。

English Translation of text in the painting:

Tea need not be of the finest quality, yet the pot is never dry;

Wine need not be the strongest, yet the cup is never empty.

A plain zither, though stringless, remains ever in tune;

A short flute, though without a defined melody, brings natural delight.

Though it may be difficult to surpass the sages of ancient times,

one can still find kindred spirit in Ji Kang and Ruan Ji.
