The gouaches, which were painted en plein air, in front of the subject, extend Sayers’ interest in rocks, sky and sea. They show confidence and skill in handling and technique and cleverly make use of the white of the paper itself to give a beautiful sense of space. The dramatic sweeping clouds are indeed a subject in themselves. Such works are also fine examples of the artist’s skill in using the white of the paper in the composition with a sureness of touch and boldness in using this blank space.
