The Centurian

14 August: 30 September 2026
A unique opportunity to view a suite of egg tempera paintings by Robert Clinch. An early large-scale painting from over 20 years ago, Patchwork Quilt, hangs amidst four recent paintings of a more intimate and domestic size. The larger works take a year or more to create so it is a real treat to have so many egg tempera paintings by the artist together and available. As with all of Robert's work, the intricate detail is quite staggering. The architectural realism is tempered by artistic creativity and wit. The  grid of a building and squares of windows making up a colourful patchwork quilt and echoed in the actual quilt drying on the rooftop. In the recent paintings, the warmth of red bricks glow and the narrative is provided through the pigeons: from Juliet in her balcony to the centurion on guard over the 100 year old building.
