John Dent: Gouaches
18 April 2026 - 22 May 2026
Known for his painting and printmaking of intimate interiors, John Dent ventures into the landscape turning to the spontaneity and freedom of gouache. Inspired by travels around Australia between 1988 – 2000, Dent continues his atmospheric exploration of wavy coastlines; sweeping plains; rolling hills; serpentine roads and rivers; panoramic vistas; pastoral idylls and nocturnal tableaux.
The gouaches capture a poetic sense of place, where the sensation of colour and shape are the priority. Dent’s subtle layering allows colour to pulsate against each other. We are presented with an impression of colour, coastal aquamarine; pastoral emerald; gentle lilac or dry golden hills; yet upon closer examination, the true array of colours used in each work is revealed. Dent’s gouaches are saturated – in colour, in experience and place.
