About the Exhibition
This exhibition explores the colour and intensity of Australia as seen through the eyes of our artists. The title of the exhibition is drawn from the catalogue of the seminal 9 x 5 Impressionist exhibition of 1889 (including the work of Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin), which took inspiration from a quote by French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme… “in painting, the first thing to look for is the general impression of colour”.
This exhibition includes works by Abram Louis BUVELOT, Haughton FORREST, Nicholas CHEVALIER, John MATHER, Walter WITHERS, Frederick McCUBBIN, Tom ROBERTS, John Peter RUSSELL, Emanuel Phillips FOX, Dorrit BLACK, Horace Hurtle TRENERRY, Kathleen SAUERBIER, Nora HEYSEN, Jacqueline HICK, Arthur BOYD, Ray CROOKE, Dick ROUGHSEY, Lin ONUS, among others.
