"Whatever the impulse to paint this scenery, and however evocative its associations, descriptive asides or documentary value, it is the painting that counts for more than the topographical accuracy or strict visual allegiance to a particular spot, and the feelings that the paintings set in motion. So these are poetic reconstructions of both place and people, the tangle result of a voyage of personal discovery, a marvellous excuse for Dent to deploy his talent for picture making. His paintings provide a genuine aesthetic pleasure, while at the same time offering a quite different idea of that part of Australia which is still a mystery to most of us, even if we've taken a bus trip to Alice Springs."
