Frederick Leist moved to London in 1908 pursuing job opportunities as a black and white illustrator for publications including Graphic. He also continued his painting career, regularly exhibiting with the Royal Academy of Arts, London between 1910 - 1925. He often painted portraits, and was particularly acclaimed for his portrayal of women and a beautiful sense of colour and light, as can be seen in this luminous depiction of a young woman in contemplation under the shade of a tree, beside the duck pond where his skill in painting reflected light his evident. It was selected for the Royal Academy, London in 1913, as well as hung at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français the following year.
Leist was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists; the Chelsea Arts Club; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; and exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. In 1917, he was appointed as official war artist with the Australian Imperial Force. Leist returned to Australia in 1926 and continued to paint, including portrait commissions; exhibit and teach.
