Derived from the graphic image of ‘Two natives of New Holland Advancing to combat’, engraved by Thomas Chambers for Sydney Parkinson’s posthumous Endeavour journal (1770/3) this work contrasts the copperplate cross hatched line rendering of the warriors against a soft brushwork background of pattern map for Spode’s Willow. Indigenous people (depicted by Parkinson) and imaginary places (projected by Spode) symbolically meet in a reminder of a collision of cultural contact that transformed both.
