Charles Conder and Tom Roberts worked together at Coogee during Easter, April 1888. "At this time, 'All On A Summer's Day' was painted. It's Nerliesque Umbrella is it's dominant motif. Trees and foreground grass are written down in a way reminiscent of Julian Ashton though much looser, and the tiny figure of an artist with umbrella and easel amusingly crowning the crest of the dune, should, one feels, be a reference to Tom Roberts."
